The Blue Ridge Mountain Health Project was established in 2003-2004. Its origins are in faith based service. Since that time, this dental clinic for the working people in western North Carolina who cannot afford dental care, has provided dental service for this region. The need is great. I became actively involved in the clinic on a volunteer basis 2 days a month starting in 2009. At that time I was treating patients solely for TMD, similarly to my Atlanta practice. It became evident to me; however, that I needed to do more. While in the Air Force I had worked exclusively in the area of removable prosthodontics (dentures and partial dentures). Upon my discharge, I returned to Atlanta and was asked to teach part time at Emory University's School of Dentistry in Removable Prosthodontics. Since I sold my practice, I have not made a denture in 10 years. We see many patients in Cashiers, NC where that have lost their teeth due to decay and poor hygiene and some at a very young age. In the past we would send them to a denture mill to have teeth made. Because of my past denture experience, the executive director of the clinic asked if I could see these former patients. Quite often the teeth they received looked bad and did not fit. I finally told the director that I should take on making dentures and prevent the patients from having to suffer with a poorly fitting prosthesis. We were able to find funding and a denture lab that would give us a good price and are now making dentures for these patients. I find it amazing that God has allowed me to reutilize a skill I learned early in my career and to re-apply it toward the end.
